How to do a Manicure Card Set

Digital Illustration & Layout Design

I designed and created a card set called “How to do a Manicure”. I have always enjoyed nail care and when lock down happened due to the Covid-19 pandemic I knew many people were now doing manicures at home. Therefore,  I created this card set so people could give themselves manicures at home simply by flipping through the cards. Overall I wanted the cards to be bright, fun, bubbly, informational and enjoyable for all people whether beginners or experts in nail care.

Process

I began designing my cards by getting a sense of the general layout and understanding how the text information and visuals would be best balanced on a card together. I did this by creating physical sketches of the layout for my cards.  I then recreated my sketches digitally, edited my design and worked with different typefaces to eventually create the final design. I was also sure as I was designing the cards to use guide lines to ensure that the layout for all the cards matched.

Final Cards

The final product was a very colorful and informational set of ten cards. I used 5 different base colors with two cards per color. To ensure the cards appear as a set, I kept the layout the same for every card and used the circles or ‘bubbles’ in the background to have some visual consistency as the instructional visuals would be changing with each card.

Conclusion & Reflection

Designing and creating these cards allowed me to better practice my layout and visual design skills. I thought very carefully about how each card would be laid out and how each piece of information, both text based and visuals, could all live together on a single 3x5 card. I also used my visual design skills to allow this card set to have a true personality. The use of certain colors, the stylistic choice for the informational visuals and the background visuals all came together to create a card set that is bright and fun.
